Respected Citizen Had Farmed Most of His Life - Was Ill for Several Months. ~ J.M. Swofford, widely-known citizen, died at his home on Logan street Saturday night after an illness of several months. He was 71 years of age. ~ The funeral and burial took place yesterday morning at Grassy Pond Baptist church, the services being conducted by the Rev. J.D. Baily, of Cowpens, assisted by the Rev. J.M. Hamrick, pastor of the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church. ~ The pall bearers were the six sons of the deceased, as follows; R.C., J.N., J.L., C.F., Arthur and Albert Swofford. ~ Besides the sons named above, Mr. Swofford is survived by his third wife, who before marriage was Mrs. Mary McMurray, and three daughters as follows; Mrs. J.V.L McCraw, Mrs. W.A. Hopper and Mrs. Clarence Quinn. One half-brother, David Cash, of Cowpens, also survives. ~ James Marion Swofford was born in 1850 near the Cowpens battleground. He lived practically all of his life in the Grassy Pond section of the county until four years ago when he gave up active work and moved to Gaffney. He was the last living charter member of the Grassy Pond Baptist church, and he served the institution as a deacon many years. ~ Mr. Swofford was a hard worker during his active days. He was quiet and unassuming in manner, and he was admired and held in esteem by all who knew him.
