As for the the death date on the stone it is incorrect also. It has a death date of 1877 but how can that be when he purchased land on 6-24-1878? Searcy County, Arkansas Federal Land Records Bureau of Land Management, Homestead and Cash Entry Patents before 1908 for what is now Searcy Co. Name Sec # Acres. Date Mays James 27 16N 17W 40 1878-06-24 Mays James 28 16N 17W " 1859-12-10 Mays James 34 16N 17W " 1855-03-01 Mays James 34 16N 17W " 1859-07-01 As you can see James Mays was still alive in 1878. Grandson James C. White bought 3 of the parcels in 1882 and his widow Parmelia sold her part 80 acres in 1884. There has been no death certificate found BUT James died somewhere between June 1878 and July 1883 when his widow remarried.
