Humeston New Era July 23, 1902 Mr. James McCullough died at the residence of his son in Cambria on July 10, 1902, at 7:30 o'clock p.m. The deceased was born in County-down, Ireland, September 1, 1818. His age was 83 years, 10 months and 10 days. When but a child about ten years old he and his parents moved to Charion County, Pennsylvania. While there he was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Kirk. After a few years they moved to Wayne County, Iowa, and settled near Corydon, where they have since lived. To this union were born ten children, six daughters and four sons. One son preceded him to that happy land where parting will be no more. He lives a wife, nine children, John, William and Albert McCullough, Mrs. J. M. Beakler, Mrs. F. E. Johnston, Mrs. G. W. Sloan, Mrs. Lewis Palmer and Miss Belle McCullough; the first five being present when the hour of death come to their father. All were present at the funeral but two, also a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren to more the loss of a loved one. Mr. McCullough was always social and hospitable, tender hearted and fond of friends. Very early in life he became a devoted Christian and for several years had been an active member of the Presbyterian Church. His chief delight had been in its service and in its song of praise, he had always joined in with pleasure. What the church is doing in the world in its varied mission enterprises was a subject of deep interest to him, and he was always identified with the work to the extent of his abilities. He believed the follower of our divine Master should walk close to him. This he ever tried to do. His last sickness was of about four weeks' duration, during which time his suffering was terrible, yet he never murmured or complained. He knew the end was near and was anxious for the Chariot to roll on. His death causes the deepest sorrow in the hearts of every friend and acquaintance. He was ever a kind and loving parent and a helpful neighbor and friend. To the sorrowing children the tenderest sympathy is extended. May the pure and Christian life of their father ever be a guide to their footsteps. The funeral services took place at the Cambria in the Christian church July 12, conducted by the Presbyterian pastor, of Allerton, assisted by Rev. Tennant, after which the remains were borne to the Corydon cemetery and carefully laid to rest. Redeemed from earth and pain, Ah!
