Description	:	James McKinley "Mac" Haddix was the second oldest son of James Phillip Haddix and Emma Jane (Payne)Haddix and was raised near Merna, Nebraska. He had two older brothers including Oliver, who died shortly after childbirth, and 5 younger sisters and two younger brothers. Phillip also died at childbirth. In August 1912, Luella, Cynthia, Clara, Hazel, Opel and Fay were admitted to an orphanage, at the St. Francis Academy at Columbus, NE. It was a boarding and day care school run by the Sisters of St. Francis. "The first boarding school in Nebraska, St. Francis Academy, was opened in 1882 by the Sisters of St. Francis from Lafayette, Indiana. In 1925, it became a parish school for day students only, and the name was again changed to St. Bonaventure's School. The parish school included the high school grades."-History of Platte County During this same time period, Mac and Oscar, 16 and 17 respectively, left the homestead in Merna to work in the hayfields near Broken Bow. In 1917, he enlisted in the US Army during World War I and served in Russia with the American Expeditionary Force, Siberia. When he returned, he married Elsie May Weaver of Lexington, Nebraska in 1920. They settled near Bridgeport, living in a sodhouse South of Bridgeport. They raised 8 children. He worked for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in Bridgeport and the surrounding area for over 40 years. While living on on P Street in Bridgeport he volunteered as a museum curator at the Pioneer Trails Museum until the 1980's.
