Read More	Death Calls James McNair Dies At Ripe Old Age Thursday Morning Just as we are going to press Thursday morning we learn of the death of James McNair, Sr, which occurred about 5:30 o’clock. Our columns are already over-crowded and we can make but a brief mention at this time. Mr. McNair was one of the old pioneers of this section. In the early eighties he filed on a homestead in Sand Creek town ship and made his home there for many years. For several years past he has been residing here in town. He was highly respected by everyone who knew him. Death did not come as a very great surprise, as he has been growing weaker steadily for some time past and had taken no nourishment for several days. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral, and it is probable that it will not be held before Saturday. A more extended obituary will be made next week. Times-Enterprise, Wessington, Beadle, South Dakota Friday, March 15, 1912, p1 c5 Funeral service for the late James McNair were held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon, March 16, conducted by Rev. King. A large crowd of the old neighbors and friends filled the church, by their presence paying a tribute of respect to the memory of the departed. James McNair was born in Canada on December 23, 1827, and died at his home in Wessington, South Dakota, on March 14, 1912, having lived to the ripe old age of 84 years, 2 months and 20 days. He was of Scotish parentage and was brought up in the Presbyterian faith, but there being no church of that creed in his neighborhood he united with the Methodists some fourteen years previous to his death. At an early age he moved with his parents from Canada to New Jersey and later to New York. In 1860 he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Gregory, to which union three children were born, all of whom are still living, James D. McNair, of Huron, Mrs. G. W. Pettis, of Arlington, and Mrs. H. C. Hutchinson of this place. During the civil war he enlisted in defense of his country and served in the 143rd New York and later in the 50th Engineer Corps, serving until the close of the war. Soon after the war he turned his face westward, locating successively in Illinois, Iowa and finally in 1883 on a homestead about 11 miles south of Wessington, South Dakota, where he made his home for many years. For some time past he has made his home in Wessington. Besides the children above mentioned the deceased leaves a wife and four sisters to mourn his departure. Three of the sisters resided in New York and one in Iowa. James McNair was a man of unimpeachable integrity, honored and respected by all who knew him. His life in this community has been a model of Christian uprightness and consistency. The whole community extends sympathy to the bereaved widow and children.
