One of his sons, S.D. Sturtz, of Boone, was also at his bedside when death came. The remains were brought to Boone on No. 3 Friday morning and taken to the Welin undertaking parlors. There they lay in state from 11:00 until 12:30 o’clock and were viewed by many of his old friends and neighbors. At 1:00 o’clock the large funeral cortege started for Bethel Chapel, north of the city, where at 2:00 o’clock the funeral services were held. The services were conducted by the Rev. A.L. Golden of the Marion street M.E. church and the Rev. Joseph A. Anderson. The Marion street choir sang “Rock of Ages”, “Going Down the Valley” and “Abide With Me”. An immense concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended the services and numerous beautiful floral tributes attested the general esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew him. Six grandsons served as pall bearers and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot in Bass Point cemetery beside his wife who passed away two years ago. James M. Sturtz was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, January 9, 1833, and was in his seventy ninth year at the time of his death. He was one of a large family of sixteen children and grew to manhood on a farm there with his parents. In 1853 he came to Boone county and the following spring was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Goetzman. They immediately took up their residence on the old homestead four miles north of Boone, where they made their home for fifty five years. To them were born seven children, two of whom, with the wife and mother, have preceded him in death. The surviving children are: W.A., S.D., G.W. and James Sturtz of Boone and Anna D. (William) Paulson of Chicago. He is also survived by twenty three grand children and five great grandchildren, also five brothers and three sisters, one brother dying about three weeks ago. Mr. Sturtz was among the most industrious of the pioneer settlers of the county, a man of sterling worth and strict integrity, just and honorable in all his dealing with his fellowmen, thrifty and industrious, he built up a fine home, surrounded by all the necessary comforts of life, a loving and devoted husband and father, a steadfast friend and a kind neighbor, he was well beloved by all who knew him and his passing away will be keenly regretted by the entire community. He has always been a man of strong physique and mental vitality and enlayed good healthy until about two years ago. Shortly after his wife’s death he suffered a sunstroke from the effects of which he never seemed to fully recover. He continued to live on the farm, one of his sons staying with him a portion of the time, until last October, when he gave up housekeeping and went to Chicago to live with his daughter. In May of that year he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered but grew gradually weaker until he passed peacefully away on August 2nd.
