Also surviving are grandsons, James Governale, William Winkler and Gideon Peet; and great-granddaughter, Anna Lee Governale. James Melvin Peet was born July 17, 1922, in Anamosa, Iowa, where his maternal grandparents, Guy and Carrie Eckerman, lived at the time. He was the only child of James W. Peet and Cora Eckerman Peet. He received his elementary education at rural school Fairview No. 4, his secondary education at the Anamosa High School, and his college education at the University of Iowa, where he was given his bachelor's degree with honors in English in 1944. He received his master's degree at Columbia University, New York City, in 1946. He was raised on the R.M. Peet farm one mile west of Fairview. He lived in New York City for seven years between 1944 and 1951. He had one daughter, Christina, by his first wife, Joellen. He had five children by his second wife, Mary Ann: Will, Anne, Mary-Minn, John and Robert. He taught in three colleges over the period from 1954 to 1986: Stetson University, DeLand, Fla., from 1954 to 1958; The American University of Beirut, Lebanon, from 1958 to 1970; and Montgomery College in Maryland from 1970 to 1986. From his high school days he was a firm believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and belonged successively to the Anamosa Congregational Church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Anamosa, Faith Lutheran Church of DeLand, Fla., and German Protestant Church (Evangelische Gemeinde) of Beirut, Lebanon. After he and his family returned from Lebanon to the United States in 1970, he let his denominational memberships lapse when he found that in his 12-year absence, the churches in the United States had moved in directions incompatible with his understanding of Christianity. Nevertheless, in his personal life, he continued to cultivate the Protestant religion as it was set forth by Luther, Calvin and Karl Barth, as far as that was possible. He cultivated the Liberal Arts, and the sciences of God and man, both professionally and privately, from his college days until the time of his death. Memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund at First Congregational Church, 107 E. First St., Anamosa.
