The funeral services were held from the Pleasant Hill church in Marcy, at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. A.L. Golden of the Marion street M.E. church in Boone, and attended by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. The music was furnished by a choir from Woodward. The remains were laid to rest in Pleasant Hill cemetery. He had been a faithful member of the Methodist church since a boy. James Miller was born in Pike county, Ohio, November 12, 1829, making him 81 years, 3 months and 19 days old at the time of his death. September 8, 1850, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Stumbo in Highland county, Ohio, and to them were born fifteen children, nine of whom are living, six daughters and three sons, all of whom are grown to manhood and womanhood and all were present at the funeral. They are, Mrs. Hannah Troutwine and Mrs. Nancy Scott of Boone, A.T. Miller of Ardmore, South Dakota, Joshua Miller of Neligh, Nebraska, and Mrs. Rebecca Sparks, Mrs. Susie Buzzell Phillip Miller, Mrs. Sarah Finisted and Mrs. Carrie E. Mcitee all of Marcy township. There are sixty one grandchildren, forty nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren living. With his wife and two children he started from Ohio to Iowa by boat on the Ohio river and landed in Keokuk in March, 1855. There he engaged in chopping wood for a time while waiting for a team from Boone county to haul them here. They reached Boone county in April, 1855, and settled on a farm in Marcy township. They have resided here ever since, with the exception of one year spent in Linn county, Iowa. He was a veteran of the civil war, being a member of the 9th Iowa infantry from Boone county. He was a resident of the state fifty six years and of Boone county fifty five. He was a most worthy citizen and neighbor, of the sturdy stock that has made the greatness of Iowa, and his countless friends extend sincere sympathy to the wife and children in their sorrow.
