MILLS TODAY Another Veteran Laid to Rest - Was Pioneer Resident of This Community The funeral services for James Mills, pioneer resident of this community, wee held this afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist church, and were in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. T. Bishop. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors, members of the G.A.R. and the Ladies of the G.A.R., together with many of the older business and professional men, all of whom gathered to pay a tribute of respect to a man honored by everyone who knew him. The body of Mr. Mills was brought to Perry yesterday from Long Beach, California, where his death occurred last Wednesday. Mrs. W. E. Mills and her daughter, with whom he had been spending the winter, accompanied the body to this city. Mr. Mills had been in exceptionally good health all winter and was sick only a few days. A week ago Sunday he was taken ill with a heart attack, but was better the following day and Tuesday was able to be up. He suffered a relapse on Wednesday, however, and passed away within a short time. The physicians summoned pronounced the disease hardening of the arteries. Mr. Mills was 78 years of age. He was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio, on August 29, 1841, but when only two years old came with his parent to Illinois. In 1848 the family moved to Polk county, Iowa. They lived there until 1854, when they came to this community. In 1869 he was married to Mary Elizabeth Mathis and two children were born to them, Samuel Edwin, who died in infancy, and William E., who passed away on October 15th, 1904. The wife died April 4, 1884. For many years Mr. Mills was actively engaged in farming, but of late has lived a retired life, spending his winters with his daughter-in-law in Long Beach and his summers in Perry. He was an active member of the G.A.R. and the Odd Fellows and one of the communities most respected citizens. One sister, Mrs. D. C. Beers of Perry and two brothers, Parker Mills of Perry and William Mills of Stockton, California, survive him. James Mills was a man who was a man in every sense of the word (sic). He was quiet and unassuming, honest and straightforward, true to his friends and just to all. His death takes from Perry a good citizen. ********* Civil War Veteran Co. G, 2nd Iowa Cavalry Mills, James. Age 20. Residence Des Moines, nativity Ohio. Enlisted Aug. 2, 1861. Mustered Aug. 30, 1861. Mustered out Oct. 3, 1864 Davenport, Iowa, expiration of term of service.
