CRAIL-WELL KNOWN BURLINGTON CONDUCTOR SUCCUMBS AFTER MUCH SUFFERING The death of J. Milton Crail occurred at the Ottumwa hospital yesterday afternoon at 12:20 o'clock of a complication of diseases of cystitis and a prostatic abscess, from which he has been suffering for the past three years. His final illness, however, was of only a few days duration, and his sudden death will be a surprise to his many friends. Mr. Crail resided at 923 Hackberry Street, and was employed as a freight conductor on the Chariton branch of the C., B. & Q. He came from home about two weeks ago, since which time he has been under the care of Dr. S.A. Spilman. Thursday of last week he was removed to the Ottumwa hospital, where Dr. Spilman, assisted by Dr s. Herrick, Houck, Williams, Sheafe and Wilson, performed an operation with the hopes of prolonging his life, or at least relieving him from the intense pain from which he had been suffering. His case appeared to be a hopeless one, but the operation resulted in alleviating to a considerable extent the intense suffering, and when death came he was perfectly conscious and his last moments were passed in peace. Mr. Crail was born in Fairfield, Jefferson county, April 13, 1856, and has been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 19 years. He was married to Miss Emily S. Powers, of Chariton, in 1875. To this union were born three children, Alvin, Ernest and Nora, all of whom survive him. Alvin, the eldest son, is a member of Company G, stationed at Jacksonville, Fla., and has been notified of his father's death. One brother, T.B. Crail, of Creston, and two sisters, Mrs. Herbert Kilgore, of Kasson, Iowa and Mrs. M. Mausberger, of Tekamah, Neb., are the other relatives left to mourn their loss. Mr. Crail has been an employee of the C., B. & Q. railroad company for the past 19 years. He was a member of the O.R.C., and was also a member of the Knights of Pythias of this city, under whose auspices the funeral obsequies will be conducted, assisted by the O.R.C. society. The time of the funeral will not be decided upon until the arrival of his son, Alvin. Children of James Crail and Emily Powers are: i. Alvin J. Crail, born January 19, 1877 in Chariton, Lucas Co., Iowa; died June 15, 1959 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA. ii. Ernest E. Crail, born December 13, 1882 in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA. iii. Nora B. Crail, born September 12, 1880 in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA.
