Well-Known Pioneer, James Mohler, Passes On Monday, August 20th, the Ohaton and Camrose districts lost a highly respected citizen in the sudden passing of James Mohler, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 8 days. He passed away quietly at the home of his grandson, Donnie Mohler, where he had gone to rest, following a fire at his home. The late Mr. Mohler was born in Carroll County, Iowa, on June 12, 1882, one of four sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Mohler. On February 14, 1905, he married Rose Murray at Parker, South Dakota. Early in the spring of 1903 Mr. Mohler Sr. arrived with his family at Wetaskiwin and trekked to a homestead north of Round Hill. Later, James joined his father in the lumber business in Wetaskiwin. In 1905 he moved to Ohaton and started a lumber business there. Mr. Mohler was a real pioneer and added much to the growth of Ohaton and community. It was James Mohler who constructed the first brush cutter to operate successfully in this area. Just before his passing he completed an automatic rock picker, on which he had spent many hours of his leisure time, since his retirement from active farming. Mr. Mohler was also a keen sportsman. In his racing career, his harness horses took him to many parts of Western Canada and the U.S.A. His first race horse was a cold named Ohaton Jim. Also an ardent curler in his younger days, his keen interest in the game remained until his passing. In addition to business affairs, Mr. Mohler was always active in community affairs and projects, giving freely of his money and talents, where his cheerful disposition and zeal were ever an inspiration to those associated with him. Mrs. Mohler predeceased him in May 1953. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Dandell, of Red Deer; one son, A. Donald Mohler, of Camrose; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; also three brothers, Frank of Camrose, George of Holden and William of Vancouver, B.C. Excerpt from The Camrose Canadian, September 5th, 1952, page 9; Transcribed by Deb ============== News Article from the Edmonton Journal dated August 21, 1962 - page 3: District Man Dies After Fire Smoke and exertion have been blamed for the death of James Mohler, age 80, of Ohaton. Mr. Mohler was alone in the house in the burning basement bedroom early Monday morning. He attempted to extinguish the fire, then attempted to escape through a small window, finally being forced up a burning staircase to get help. He died at a neighbour's house about an hour later. Obituary from the Edmonton Journal dated August 24, 1962 on page 28. Funeral Held For Pioneer Ohaton - Funeral services were held here for pioneer James Mohler, age 80. He came with his family to Wetaskiwin about 1900. He then homesteaded at Round Hill in 1903. He moved to Ohaton in 1905 to start a lumber yard. He built and operated an elevator and flour mill. Recently, he was interested in farming. Many of his stories are documented in the anthology produced for Alberta's Golden Jubilee.
