Description	:	James "Jim" Monroe Keen & his wife, Martha Jane Frost bought their farm in 1884 after their marriage in 1883. They were approached about selling their farm by relatives of Martha Jane Frost Keen's. They refused to sell & a short time later some of James Keen's clothing was stolen from his home and found in a nearby railroad tunnel. It was believed the clothing was stolen to frighten the Keens into selling their farm. They were approached about selling their farm by relatives of Martha Jane Frost Keen's. They refused to sell & a short time later some of James Keen's clothing was stolen from his home and found in a nearby railroad tunnel. It was believed the clothing was stolen to frighten the Keens into selling their farm. In September 1887 James Keen heard a loud noise at the barn while in the house with his wife and 2 young daughters. When he went to the barn to investigate he saw 3 people hidden in the stable, Their hands and feet had been blackened and one appeared to be a woman. James Keen was struck with an object on his forehead. Later when Martha Jane went to the barn she found James bleeding and spitting up blood. Suspicion in the community began to turn to the relatives who had sought to purchase the farm. Later it was learned that a neighbor went to visit the suspects on the night of the attack and observed the suspects had something black smeared on their faces. They tried to conceal their faces. James Keen passed away from the blow to his head on September 24, 1887. He was only 24 years old. When the suspects heard of his passing they went into hiding and later moved from Allen County to another state.
