Mason, Company G, Fifteenth New Hampshire volunteers [died of disease Aug. 6, 1863, Cleveland, Ohio], and another brother, Charles F., enlisted from Loudon in Company F, Twelfth New Hampshire volunteers, the same company in which the subject of... P.O. ad., Pittsfield. James belonged to a patriotic family. He was a brother of David B. Mason, of Company G, Seventh New Hampshire volunteers, also of John C. Mason, Company G, Fifteenth New Hampshire volunteers [died of disease Aug. 6, 1863, Cleveland, Ohio], and another brother, Charles F., enlisted from Loudon in Company F, Twelfth New Hampshire volunteers, the same company in which the subject of this sketch served [fell May 3, 1863, Chancellorsville]. These four brothers were nephews of Jesse M. Mason, also of Company F, Twelfth regiment [survived the war]. James M. Mason served very faithfully until December, 1862, when he was taken sick and was neglected by the officers whose duty it was to look after him. It is thought by his comrades that if he had had proper care he might have recovered. On January 12, 1863, he was discharged at Falmouth, and carried on board a boat for transportation home, where he died. --History of Pittsfield, N. H. in the Rebellion by H. L.
