Gary Lee BROHERD =========== May 26, 1941, Ottumwa Daily Courier, Ottumwa, Iowa: Native Of Wapello County Dies At 83 James Monroe Broherd, 83, died Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at his home, Ottumwa route 7. He was the son of James and Susan Broherd and was born in Wapello county near Dahlonega November 25, 1857. He had lived here practically his entire life. Mr. Broherd is survived by his wife Rowena, two daughters, Evelyn Broherd and Marguerite Broherd; three sons, Robert at home, Walter and Tracy of Ottumwa. Funeral services were held at Johnson's chapel at 2:30 p.m. today, conducted by the Rev. L.E. Welshons of the Open Bible church. Burial was to be in Highland cemetery at Eddyville. ================== "James Broherd purchased 7 cemetery lots in 1923 (the year Amanda died) in Highland Cemetery, Eddyville, Iowa (West 1/2 lot #50, section 4) for a total of $12.50. The cemetery does not have records for any of the plots except one Lloyd DeMoss as the records were destroyed during flooding. The graves are not marked. I remember as a little girl going to a cemetery not too far from Oskaloosa to unmarked graves to put flowers with my grandmother. She made a big deal out of "them" not having the money for markers.
