Description	:	The following provided by Find a Grave contributor "Cara" The River Press, Fort Benton, MT, 29 May 1912 Drowned in the Missouri River Word was brought to town Friday evening by William Blevins, of lower Highwood, that Monte Walker was drowned while trying to ford the Missouri river on horseback. The fatal accident happened about seven o'clock Friday evening, near the mouth of Highwood creek, and no trace of the body has yet been found. Read More	The following provided by Find a Grave contributor "Cara" The River Press, Fort Benton, MT, 29 May 1912 Drowned in the Missouri River Word was brought to town Friday evening by William Blevins, of lower Highwood, that Monte Walker was drowned while trying to ford the Missouri river on horseback. The fatal accident happened about seven o'clock Friday evening, near the mouth of Highwood creek, and no trace of the body has yet been found. The unfortunate man was trying to cross from the north to south bank of the river and before attempting to ford the turbulent stream he called over to Mr. Blevins asking if he had a row boat. Upon receiving a reply in the negative, Mr. Walker rode his horse into the river and when about half way across was swept from the saddle and disappeared in the swift current. The horse returned to the north side, and while climbing up the bank the saddle slipped under him, showing it was not securely cinched. Monte Walker lived on a ranch between Belt and Highwood creek, and was well known in that locality. He was a son of the late James A. Walker, an old-time resident, and was about thirty years of age.
