Then there was but fifteen states in the Union, and George Washington was President of the United States. With his parents he moved to the then territory of Ohio and lived in Jefferson and Carroll counties. At the age of 28 years he was united in marriage to Mary Maple, who died June 18th, 1867. From this union fourteen children were born; all, with the exception of two, lived to manhood and womanhood. Eleven children survive him, seven brothers and four sisters: James, Ezekial, David, Mrs. T. W. Wood and Maple live here in Mendon township. John lives in Manhaska County; Mrs. Jane Hale in Van Buren County, and Mrs. Ann McLaughlin in Palo Alto, in this state; Jonathan and Alex are residing in Washington territory. He had 70 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.With his then young family he removed from Carroll County, Ohio, to Clayton County in the spring of 1850, residing near McGregor. At one time he owned 1200 acres of land in this township. He was among the first settlers, but four or five houses in the city when he came here. He witnessed the rapid growth of the country and saw the cities arise, Phoenix like, to become great trade centers. Has participated in many hard fought political battles; voted for one or two presidents before there was a steamboat seen on the American waters, and was past the average length of human life before the first railroad was put in operation in this country, and was a gray headed man before the first telegraph line was operated. His life has been one which would forn an interesting study -- before him "all the world a stage, and all the men and women merely players," the last scene, second childishness, and mre oblivious; "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything" -- a panorama replete with the new and fresh ideas of the constant and rapid growth of his country and the improvement in methods and manners in the life race for wealth and station."Like as the damask rose you see,Or like the blossom in the tree,Or like the dainty flower in May,Or like the morning of the day,Or like the sun or like the shade,Or like the gourd which Jona had,Even such is man; -- whose thred is spun,Drawn out, and cut, and so is done."The funeral occurred at the residence of his son, David Moody, on Sunday last, attended by a large concourse of citizens and old time neighbors and friends of the family. Rev. II. S. Church officiated. The burial took place in the family cemetery on the old homestead, and there in peace rests the old patriarch.**************
