Description	:	According to the Nichols/Nickels genealogy "James Nichols(Nickels) of Searsport and His Descendants, 1733-1943" by Charles J. Nichols, William and James Nickels and all their descendants, sons of Sally & William Nichols are the only ones who adopted the spelling Nickels outside the line of David Nickels, son of Alexander Nichols/Prudence Pendleton and all of his descendants. Alexander's other children remained Nichols. According to the source Searsport Sea Captains (1960), James was a ship captain who sailed from Searsport (Waldo County) Maine. Verified by that source, he sailed on the following vessels: the brig Waccamaw (1861); the bark McGilvery (1863, 1868); the bark T.F. Whiton (1877-81), lost on the coast of England; the ship Oneida (1875); the ship Frank Jones (1876-77); the ship Alameda (1882-87); the bark Moonbeam. According to the above source, under his command the Frank Jones left San Francisco for the Philippine Islands and was wrecked while being towed through the Golden Gate and was sold for $4,759. The day before her estimated value was $75,000. From the Republican Journal: "Captain James Nickels, a retired sea captain of Searsport, came to Portland, Maine to get the body of his son-in-law, Capt. James Y. Waterhouse, who died recently at Maine General Hospital." After making arrangements with hospital authorities, Capt. Nickels went into a restaurant for supper where he fell heavily to the floor. He was pronounced dead, the cause of death was heart disease. The remains of the two men arrived in Searsport by train together. Captain Nickels was 60 years and 6 months old. He had followed the sea from boyhood. He left a wife and three daughters."
