JAMES OLDHAM was born December 23, 1837 near Shelbyville, Shelby county, Indiana. He moved with his parents to Eddyville, Mahaska county, Iowa Sept. 1855. He was married to Charlotte Whited Sept. 9, 1859. He was united with the Church of Christ at Eddyville in 1865, he served as a deacon about two years. He moved to (says Mitchell county Nebr. that is wrong it should read) Nuckolls county, Nebr. Sept 1875, and united with the OxBow Church of Christ of which he remained a faithful member serving as an Elder for a number of years. He died at the home of his daughter Mrs. N. L. Adamson, Feb. 14, 1908 at the age of 70 years, l month and 22 days. He was the father of nine children, seven girls and two boys, four of whom have preceded him to that home over there. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife, and five daughters, Mrs. T. J. Whited, Mrs. W. H. Norwood, Mrs. N.L. Adamson, Mrs. M.F. Grossman and Mrs. O.E. Rennick together with one sister Mrs. M. Littrel of Nuckolls county, and a brother George Oldham of Lancaster, California, a number of grandchildren and a host of near and dear friends. To know him was to love him. He will long be remembered in his old church as a man who was a lover of the truth and familiar with the word and as the end approached he could say with Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith". The funeral service conducted at the OxBow church Saturday, Feb 15, 1908 at 2:00p.m by F.E.Day of Nelson, Nebr. Interment made in the OxBow cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BIOGRAPHY: in 1890 Biographical & Historical Memorirs of Adams, Clay, Webster & Nuckolls co. Nebr. (pp 781) JAMES OLDHAM was born in Shelby County, Ind., in December 1837, and is the fourth child born to Aaron and Mary A.(Conner) Oldham, natives of Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively. The father was reared to manhood in his native State, and upon attaining his majority, he left his home and moved to Indiana, there engaged in agricultural pursuits, and died in 1877, in his sixtieth year, the mother having previously died in 1872. They were the parents of twelve children, seven of whom grew to maturity, and only three of whom are now living. The survivors are Margaret (wife of James Littrel, of this county), George (of Liberty Precinct) and James (the subject) James Oldham spent his boyhood and early youth in his native state, in the common schools of which he obtained his education, and at the age of sixteen years came with his parents to Iowa. Here he farmed during the summer, and in the winter worked in the coal mines, Following these occupations for about ten years. When he was twenty -three years of age he commenced life on his own responsibility, selecting farming as his occupation, which calling he has followed ever since. In the fall of 1879 he came to this county, and purchased eighty acres of unimproved land, on which was a very poor house, for which he paid $900. To this he has since added 160 acres more, making him an excellent farm of 240 acres of good land, all of which is improved, with a neat and commodious dwelling, good barns, and out -buildings, fences, etc. As a fruit raiser Mr. Oldham has achieved to great success, having one of the largest and finest orchards in the county. One has but to look at his fine growing meadows to see that tame grasses of all kinds can be raised in this grand young State. In 1859 he wedded Miss Charlotte Whited, daughter of Carson and Abigail (IBollibough) Whited, and by this union became the father of nine children, five of whom are living: Cora A. (now the wife of John Furnish, a farmer of this county), Rosina (the wife of Willam Norwood, also a farmer of this county), Jennie D., Alpha and Pearl all at home. The children who died were aged, respectively, four, two and four years, and Robert died when he was sixteen years of age. As Mr. Oldham is now beginning to feel the advance of years, he has retired from the active supervision of his farm, the work being carried on by his nephew, A.V. Oldham, son of George Oldham, of this county, and a very energetic and capable young man. Both Mr. and Mrs. Oldham are members of the Christian Church, and are honored and esteemed by all with whom they come in contact.
