Bird, pastor of the church, officiated. A quartet, comprised of Mr. and Mrs. K.C. Haumbach, August Meier, and Mrs. C.L. Johnson, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "No Night There" and "Going Down the Valley." They were accompanied on the piano by Richard Meier. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were: C.J. Overman, Adolph Wolff, Wm. B. Smith, Geo. Livermore, A.L. Krause and Robert Patterson. ------------------------------- The obituary read at his funeral service follows: James Orson Carter, son of Thomas and Isabel Carter was born July 15, 1871, at Gallipolis, Ohio, and grew to young manhood there. At the age of 19 he came to Floyd County, Iowa, and made his home with relatives, Mr. and Mrs. William Carter.(see note) On November 1, 1899, he was married to Miss Vinnie M. Slinyer. They became the parents of three children: a son, Clifford, who lives at home with his mother and two daughters, Mrs. Marvel Tefft of Nashua, and Mrs. Mabel Nichols of Waterloo. There are also five grandchildren. Mr. Carter was one of a family of three sisters and five brothers. There are three brothers surviving him: Burton of Chicago, Illinois; Charles of Springfield, Ohio; and Richard of Gallipolis, Ohio. He had lived on the same farm northwest of Nashua for the past 32 years, and had been interested in community life and affairs. For some years he had been a member of the boards of directors of the Big Four Fair Association and the Nashua Farmers Co-operative Creamery. He was a many of integrity; a good, pleasant, accommodating neighbor, and to express his view of life and his faith in God he became a member of the Disciples of Christ church at Charles City some fifteen years ago. ------------------------------------------- Note: his wife, Vinnie Mabel Slinyer (Slinger) and their son, Clifford Carter, are also interred at this cemetery as per correspondence with cemetery director(s). ------------------------------------------- Note: Wm B.
