Daniel Bland, who died in this city on Wednesday, September 2, 1908, was born in Green county, Indiana, April 24, 1824. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (McBain) Bland. He was married in the same county in which he was born, to Sarah Ann Elrod, Sept. 4, 1845. Six children were born to this union only one of whom is now living - Mrs. Catherine Dolan, of Oklahoma. His oldest son, John, enlisted at the age of 17, in the 59th Indiana, and died of fever at Newberne, N.C., while on his way to join Sherman's army on its march through Georgia. Mr. Bland enlisted for the six months service first on July 28, 1863, in Co. A., 115th Regt. Ind. Vol. Inft. He saw some hard service in Kentucky and Tennessee, living much of the time on quarter rations, and some of the time on parched corn alone. At the expiration of the time for which he enlisted he again enlisted in the 156th Ind. Vol. Inf., March 16th, 1865, serving to the end of the war. His first wife died Sept. 1, 1859, and he was married again on April 5, 1860, to Mary Gentry, to which union there were born ten children, five of whom with the widow are left to mourn his death. The children are Sarah Eakins, Concordia; Daniel E., Miltonvale; John H., Jewell City; Mrs. Cordelia Wiley, Concordia; and Malcom O., of Wray, Colorado. Mr. Bland was a member of the W.T. Sherman Post, Grand Army of the Republic, under whose direction the funeral was held. He came to Kansas and settled in Buffalo township, in this county, in 1873. He held all the various township offices in this township, and was Representative from Cloud County in the legislature of 1889. It was the pleasure of the editor of the Kansan to have been a colleague with Mr. Bland in the same legislative session and we are in position to give our personal testimony to his high character as a man. He has lived to a ripe old age and dies respected by all who know him, surrounded by a devoted wife and loving children who also enjoy the highest esteem of all who know them. Who is there to say that this is not the ending of a perfect life - enjoying to the close the things that honorable men strive for, a good name and the esteem of all mankind and whom he came in contact. Such was the life of our friend who has passed away and whose earthly remains were laid away beneath the sod of the land for which he offered his life, by his affectionate comrades who made the same sacrifice for their country.
