Description	:	James Peter Ries, PhD, died of cancer at home surrounded by his family on December 10, 2011 He was born, December 21, 1940, in Clinton, IA, the oldest son of the late Emil H. and Lucile M. Ries. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Marie Doyle, on July 6, 1963 in Clinton, Iowa. Dr. Ries graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Read More	James Peter Ries, PhD, died of cancer at home surrounded by his family on December 10, 2011 He was born, December 21, 1940, in Clinton, IA, the oldest son of the late Emil H. and Lucile M. Ries. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Marie Doyle, on July 6, 1963 in Clinton, Iowa. Dr. Ries graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma and Sigma Xi honor societies as an undergraduate. He continued on to graduate school at the University of Iowa and was the recipient of a NASA Fellowship. He received a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering in 1967. Dr. Ries was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA from 1967-1973. In 1973 he began a long and distinguished career with DuPont in the Research and Development Laboratories of the Corporate Engineering Department. His contributions were valued for his expertise in diagnosing and solving problems in the precision handling of films and web technology in the US and Europe. His abilities and shared knowledge impacted the existing use of tools and techniques used today in the web and film industry. He retired in 2000 as a Senior Research Consultant. His activities included volunteering with, Tri-State Bird Rescue, White Clay Creek State Park, where he served as Chair of Volunteers, Sages of St. Mary's of Assumption Church and Beech Hill Civic Association and a variety of other organizations over the years. He was a lifelong environmentalist, nature lover and enjoyed several trips to the U.S. National Parks, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Minnesota, canoeing and backpacking with his sons and brother. In retirement he and Donna enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. He was a talented bird carver, a loving husband, proud father and doting grandfather. He was always a teacher at heart. Dr. Ries is survived by his wife, Donna, and their children, Brian James Ries and his wife Nikki of Hockessin; Mary Barbara, and her husband Craig Laudeman, Phoenix, MD; and Kevin Doyle Ries and his wife Michelle of Paoli, PA; seven granddaughters: Madison, Lucy and Piper Laudeman, Phoenix, MD; Sofia and Abigail Ries, Paoli, PA, and Alexandra and Samantha Ries, Hockessin. Also surviving: brother Thomas Ries (Joan), Alexandria, MN, sisters Sharon King, West Boyleston, MA; Donna Schneider (Kim), Faribault, MN; and Julie Flood, So. Beloit,IL. Dr. Ries is also survived by his brothers-in-law Robert Doyle (Kay) Pleasant Hill, CA, Stephen Doyle (Remie) Anchorage, AK, Edward Doyle (Nita), Iowa City, IA, and Thomas Doyle (Janet) Boulder, CO, as well as three aunts and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, December 15, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 from 6- 8 pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, December 16, at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim's memory to the Nature Conservancy, P.O. Box 6014, Albert Lea, MN 56007. Published in The News Journal from December 13 to December 15, 2011
