Read More	* IN LOVING MEMORY OF * James Phillip Gaffney was born on Monday; October 15, 1934 in Winthrop; Buchanan County, Iowa. James was the son of Peter and Lila Mae (Leatherman) Gaffney. He grew up in the area of his birth and graduated from the Winthrop High School. As a young man, he had worked at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo; Black Hawk County, Iowa. On Thursday; July 31, 1952 he was inducted to the United States Army and served our country during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge on Friday; July 29, 1955. He moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in 1989 and faithfully volunteered as an assistant to the Chaplain's Office. He was a member of the Catholic faith; a member of the American Legion Post in West Union; Fayette County, Iowa; a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Saint Mary's Golden Classics and the Saint Mary's Funeral Choir in Marshalltown; the Knights of Columbus, Marshalltown; and the Legion of Guardsman. James Phillip Gaffney, 73, passed away on March 6, 2007, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa. Those left to mourn his passing are his sister, Mary Alice Gaffney of West Union, Iowa. His nieces; Cathy Boleyn of Elgin; Fayette County, Iowa. Colleen Hilgerson of West Union and Angela Nagel of Waterloo. Other distant relatives also survive. In eternal life, he joins his parents, grandparents, a sister, Patricia Ann Hilgerson and a brother-in-law, Howard Hilgerson. May they rest in peace. Visitation times will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening; March 9, 2007 at the funeral home, where there will be a Rosary Service held at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service held at 6:00 p.m. The family will be present to greet friends from 12:00 (Noon) until service time on Friday at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Friday; March 9, 2007 at the chapel of the Iowa Veterans Home at 1301 Summit Street in Marshalltown, Iowa.
