Mr. Johnson’s early life was spent on a farm with his father near Sterling Ill. Shortly after his marriage to Katie Thome in 1878 he moved to near Grafton, Neb., where he and Mrs. Johnson farmed for thirty year, and then retired to Geneva, where they were together until Mrs. Johnson’s death ten days ago. To Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were born four children: Mrs. Maude Bumgarner of Moscow, Idaho, Mrs. Grace Schinzel of Grafton, Neb., Harry Johnson of Ohiowa, Neb., and Mrs. Blanche Van Patten. Since the death of Mrs. Van Patten, fifteen years ago, her two children, Hazel and Goldie have made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. Those who live to mourn Mr. John’s death are his children, one sister, Mrs. Lille Thome of Rock Falls, Ill., thirteen grandchildren and many friends. Mr. Johnson’s death came as a great shock to his relatives and friends. He had assisted with the family washing that day and he appeared in his usual health. In the afternoon he took a basket into the yard and took the clothes from the line and brought the basket of clothes into the house. Then he sank into a chair and began breathing heavily. He was a sufferer from asthma and heart trouble and at first his heavy breathing did not attract special attention. Its continuance caused alarm and restoratives were administered by his granddaughters and by two neighbors, Mrs. B. H. Rumsey and Miss Marie Rumsey, who happened to be calling at the Johnson home, and a physician was summoned. A. E. Brabham and Leo Ayers were summoned also from their shop nearby. When a physician arrived, he pronounced Mr. Johnson dead, the fatal attack having lasted but a few minutes. The funeral took place from the family home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. David Tudor, who returned from his vacation at Crete for that purpose.
