Read More	The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, February 23, 1899 Death of James Pickens Pickens, James Mr. James Pickens died at his home in Kellogg, last Monday night, after a painful illness of several months, aged a little over sixty-seven years. Deceased was born in Antrim County, Ireland, Jan. 13, 1832. On the 17th day of March 1854, he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Gordon, and to them were born six children, all of whom are still living, and all except one, are residents of this county: Mrs. J. G. Morison, Mrs. H. G. Bergman, Mrs. H. S. Morrison, and Mr. T. A. Pickens of this city and vicinity, Miss Margaret Pickens at the parental home in Kellogg, and Mrs. J. F. Lyman of Rockwell City. Mr. Pickens with his wife and six children emigrated to America in 1868, and settled first in Scott County, this state, and eight years later came to Jasper County and settled on a farm in Mariposa Township. The children, with the exception of one daughter, having all married and left the parental home. Mr. and Mrs. Pickens left the farm in 1890 and moved to Kellogg. Mr. Pickens has always been a model Christian gentleman, and from his childhood a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church. He was idolized by his children and respected and honored by all who knew him. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church of Kellogg this afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. F. Chambers, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, of which deceased was a member. The interment was in the Kellogg Cemetery.
