Father of Charles Edward Wilkey. - Civil War Veteran - OBITUARY: James Polk Wilkey, son of Dennis and Rebecca Wilkey, was born Nov. 5, 1845, and departed this life Dec. 19, 1934, at the age of 89 years, one month and 14 days. In the year of 1862 he joined the Union army and served his country until the close of the war. On May 20, 1869, he was united in marriage to Sarah J. Houpt, and to this union one son was born. Both the wife and son have preceded him in death. In early age he united with the Church of Christ at Corinth and remained a member until death. He was a member of G.A.R. of Sullivan County. He held several public offices. Uncle Polk, as he was known, was always interested in the welfare of his country. To know him was to love him. Surviving are the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Birdie Wilkey, two grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Huff and Norman Wilkey; three great grandchildren, Edith, Wayne and Lucile Huff, and one brother, Francis M. Wilkey of Turman Township. Four brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death. He will be greatly missed in his community by his many friends but more by Birdie and family. OBITUARY: Jas. Polk Wilkey Taken By Death At Hospital Today Aged Veteran Of Civil War Dies At Terre Haute. James Polk Wilkey, prominent farmer of northwest of this city, died shortly after eight o'clock this morning at the Union Hospital in Terre Haute. Mr. Wilkey, who had attained the age of 89 years, was one of this county's few remaining veterans of the Civil War. he had been confined to the Mary Sherman Hospital here for a period of several weeks and was transferred to the Terre Haute hospital Sunday afternoon for an operation. However, his condition was so critical that the operation was not performed. He had lived in Sullivan County practically all of his life and was widely known. His wife died more than 30 years ago, and a son, Charles Wilkey, died in 1927. Surviving are the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Birdie Wilkey, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Huff and Norman Wilkey. A half-brother, Frank Wilkey, of near Graysville, also survives, and a number of other distant relatives. The body was brought to the Billman Funeral Home here and taken to the residence northwest of the city at four o'clock this afternoon. The funeral will be conducted from the Sullivan Christian Church Friday morning at ten o'clock, with Rev. E.C. Corts officiating. Interment will be made at Center Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Wilkey was a member of the Corinth Church of Christ, prior to it's abandonment a few years ago. OBITUARY: J.P. Wilkey Rites Held Here Today Funeral services honoring the memory of J.P. Wilkey, lifelong resident of this county, were conducted from the Christian Church here at ten o'clock this morning with Rev. E.C. Corts officiating. A host of friends paid tribute to the deceased in the rites today. Several beautiful hymns were sung by Mrs. Hugh McCreery, Mrs. Lex Sherwood Wendell Templeton, and Hugh McCreery, with Norma Sherwood playing the accompaniment. Pall bearers were Bace Burnett, Vurgil Burnett, Win Wilkey, Elmer Wilkey and Charles Bottorf. Interment was in Center Ridge Cemetery. ~~ I ONLY LIST FAMILY MEMBERS. ~~
