Read More	Son of Samuel and Mary Ellison Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Tuesday Oct. 5, 1920 James Ellison, 60, a banker of Martelle, Iowa, and well known in this county, was instantly killed shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday when the automobile in which he was driving was struck by a Milwaukee east bound passenger train, at a crossing seven miles east of Marion. Mr. Ellison was on his way home from Cedar Rapids and was alone at the time, so many details of the accident are lacking. From the appearance of the smashed automobile the trail struck it squarely and Mr. Ellison was thrown clear of the car and alighted on his head on the track ahead of the train. He suffered a fracture at the base of his skull, causing instant death. The train was stopped and the body picked up and sent back to Marion on a west bound train. It is at the Pingrey mortuary pending funeral arrangements and an investigation into the accident to be made today by Coroner David W. King to determine whether an inquest will be held. Coroner King expected to visit the scene of the accident today forenoon. Mr. Ellison is survived by one son, William, and a daughter, Mrs. Ed Gotsch, both of Martelle; three sisters, Mrs. Marshall Oxley of Marion, Mrs. Elias Chamberlain of Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Cass Blattner of Mechanicsville, and one brother, William G. of Mt. Vernon. Several hundred dollars in currency, which Mr. Ellison had with him at the time was scattered in all directions along the right-of-way, but most of it was recovered. The train was on the Cedar Rapids to Farley line and was in charge of Conductor F.H. Williams and Engineer L.C. Low. The trained continued on its run last night but the men were expected to make a statement of the accident. Mr. Low, today at Marion said he saw the automobile approaching the crossing when it was about twenty-five feet of the tracks. There is a curve at that point and this prevented either Mr. Low or the auto driver from seeing far up the track. Mr. Low feels sure that Ellison saw the train when he was about twenty five feet from the crossing, for he slowed up the car and then started again. Had Mr. Ellison continued ahead at the same speed he would probably have cleared the track as the engine struck the rear of the automobile. Mrs. Guy Church of Martelle, is feeling happy today for it was only by a mere chance that she was not in the fateful car. She is the wife of Guy Church, cashier of the bank of which Mr. Ellison is president and she came to Cedar Rapids with Mr. Ellison yesterday. She wished to get home earlier, however, so took the passenger train leaving here at 2:45 p.m. instead of waiting to ride with him.
