Sources: Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kansas Obituary: DEATH OF JAMES QUICK Another old settler and veteran of the late war has passed away in the person of James Quick, who died at his home in Clear Lake, Sunday, June 2nd, at 9:00 p.m. Deceased was born November 28, 1819, in Somersetshire, England, was married in 1846 to Mary Ann Reed, and came to America in 1848, settling near Skaneatles, New York. There he lived eight years, when he moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio. Here he enlisted with John Brown, Jr., and served in Company K 7th Kansas Cavalry, the famous Kansas Jayhawkers, his period of army service covering three years and three months. In 1871 he moved to Grundy County, Iowa, living there one year only, when he settled on a farm near Clear Lake, and since last fall has resided in town. Besides his aged widow, he leaves five children: John R. Quick, Mrs. W.W. Winnie, Mrs. J.G. Lindon and Mrs. R.S. Young of Clear Lake and Mrs. M. Collins of Edgerton, Wis. Four Children are dead. Mr. Quick had been an invalid for some time and was confined to bed during the last four months of his illness. He was a much respected citizen, and a great number of friends deeply sympathize with the family in their bereavement. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the late residence of the deceased, where an address was delivered by Rev. Flannigan, after which the remains were escorted by Tom Howard Post G.A.R. and a large concourse of relatives and friends. He was brought up as a farmer. He came to the United States in 1850. He first settled in Onondaga Co., N. Y., in the town of Marcellus. From New York, he went to Ashtabula Co., Ohio. He enlisted in 1861, under John Brown, son of old John Brown, of Kansas fame, and Harper's ferry notoriety. He participated in the battle of Corinth, and other important battles and campaigns. He served three years and was severely injured while in the service, but has not, as yet, succeeded in getting a pension. His wife was Mary Ann Reed; she was born in Somersetshire, England. They have had nine children, seven of whom are living ; two boys and five girls. The names of the deceased are, Lewis F. and Martha Cane.
