Description	:	James Darst James Darst, a lifelong resident of Issaquah, died Thursday, October 27th, 2011, at his home of 52 years, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. Jim was born on January 1st, 1927, the son of Ralph and Madie Darst, belonging to Issaquah's very earliest pioneer families. Read More	James Darst James Darst, a lifelong resident of Issaquah, died Thursday, October 27th, 2011, at his home of 52 years, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. Jim was born on January 1st, 1927, the son of Ralph and Madie Darst, belonging to Issaquah's very earliest pioneer families. He attended Issaquah High School before joining the Navy during his senior year in 1945. He served aboard a landing-craft carrier in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was honorably discharged and returned to graduate from IHS in 1947. In 1948 he married Ruth (Dobray) Darst, of League City, Texas, who he met while working as a fry-cook at the Triple X, and who graduated with him from IHS in 1947. He attended Edison Tech in Seattle, graduating as an Electrical Apprentice in 1948. After serving his apprenticeship as an uptown electrician he became a journeyman and chose work as a shipbuilder, spending 35 years on Harbor Island. He worked his way up to electrical assistant superintendent at Puget Sound Bridge & Dry Dock before transferring to Todd Shipyards where he ended his career as the head of production/planning engineers for new construction overseeing the Navy's guided-missile fast frigate (FFG) program. He was able to retire early in 1987, after which the Australian Navy invited him to Melbourne as a private consultant to advise them on initiating their own FFG construction program. He adjusted to retirement with surprising ease, perusing his twin passions of family and fishing. For 25 years he would spend a week fishing at his son's cabin on Lake Roosevelt once a month through 3 seasons out of 4, developing scores of new friends on both sides of the mountains. In between, he devoted himself to family. No man ever loved his family more or strove as hard to demonstrate that love everyday. He and his wife of 63 years, who he cherished dearly, took daily walks together, either strolling side by side through town, or discovering farmer's markets and celebrations throughout the region. They both loved Canon Beach and spent many summers with family by the ocean. Early every morning he would spend time with good friends out drinking coffee, & every Friday night in the fall for 70 years he could be found at an Issaquah High School football game. He was a remarkable example of what a husband, father, grandfather, friend, and citizen can be if a wonderfully warm, open, and loving heart is supported by diligent hard work and indomitable good humor. He will be dearly missed, but forever close; bending to lift us when we stumble, give us a bit of advice, or simply to get our knee. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his sons Tim with wife Debi, Randy with wife Daphne and Daryl with wife Nancy, grandchildren Stacy (Darst) Plant with husband Shane, Katie (Darst) Lanning with husband Jeff, Scott, Eric and Jacob, and great-grandchildren Tanner, Jayden, and Dylan. A memorial service will be held at 11am Thursday, November 3, at Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home, 540 E Sunset Way, Issaquah. A reception will follow. The family suggests remembrances to Children's Hospital, Seattle, WA.
