A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Tarnov with Fr. Rod Kneifel officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Platte Center. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, with 7 p.m. Scripture service, and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, all at the church. Jim was born Nov. 28, 1929, the son of Otto and Loretta (Beller) Schmidt, on a farm near Platte Center and attended school in District 31 in Platte County. Jim served in the Korean War and was a member of the America Legion in Platte Center. On June 23, 1953, Jim and Theresa A. Rosenthal were united in marriage at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Tarnov. Together they farmed 63 years on their home place. Jim served on the School District 17 board in Platte Center, Farmers Co-op Board in Platte Center and Burrows Township Board. He was a volunteer for the Monroe Fire Department, member of the Knights of Columbus and a faithful blood donor. Jim loved farming, gardening and mowing. Jim enjoyed mowing so much he even mowed the cemetery near their farm. Jim and Theresa enjoyed taking trips together. His 10 children, 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren kept him and Theresa very busy attending events and family get-togethers. Surviving are his wife, Theresa; children, Sandie and Bob Fischer of Columbus, Bernie Schmidt of Monroe, Barb and Leon Bender of Humphrey, Lori and Bryan Reichmuth of Humphrey, Kristen and Tom Alt of Columbus, Lisa and Todd Henke of Columbus, Jackie and Ted Wegener of Humphrey, Beverly and Tim Zach of Humphrey, Kathy and Rick Kerstiens of Castle Pines, Colorado, and Jeff Schmidt of Lincoln; 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Shirley Zoucha, Ernie and Becky Schmidt, Harry and Deb Schmidt, Bruce and Diane Schmidt and Brian and Becky Schmidt; in-laws, Harry Korus, Florence Schmidt and Pat Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents; grandson, Spence Wegener; brothers, Dick and Tom; sisters, Diane Korus and Virginia Schmidt; brother-in-law, Chet Zoucha; and sister-in-law, Theresa Schmidt.
