Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Eldora-New Providence High School gymnasium with Pastor Scott Shelburne of the First Baptist Church in Eldora, officiating. Read More	May 7, 1957-Oct. 28, 2000 ELDORA- James R. "Rick" Collins, 43, of Eldora, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, of complications of cancer. Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Eldora-New Providence High School gymnasium with Pastor Scott Shelburne of the First Baptist Church in Eldora, officiating. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be directed to the Rick Collins Scholarship Fund. Rick was born May 7, 1957, at Whitman Air Force Base in Washington County, Mo., to James and Viola Brock Collins. He lived at several Air Force bases with his parents in Italy, Guam, South Dakota and California. In 1974 he moved to Eldora where he graduated from high school in 1975. While in high school he worked for the Eldora Police Department and for a short time for United Suppliers, later returning to law enforcement. On July 22, 1977, he married Pamela Butler at the Methodist Church in Eldora. He attended Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge where he graduated in 1978. He was employed by the city of Eldora for 23 years and the last 27 months as Chief of Police. He started the DARE Program in 1990 and had served as an instructor. He was honored for life-saving in a car accident in Lower Pine Lake and instrumental in finding a lost two-year-old in rural Hamilton County with the Sheriff's Department search dog. Since July he administered finance and personnel as a co-city administrator. He served as assistant football coach for the Eldora-New Providence High School for 15 years; assistant track coach for 10 years, assistant baseball coach, weight club trainer and official from the stands. He was an avid reader and enjoyed being involved in his children's activities. He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters, He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Wilbur and Anna Brock and his paternal grandparents, James and Doris Collins.
