Funeral services were held at the family home near Onecho, Thursday, under the auspices of the A. O. U. W. lodge of this city, and the remains were laid to rest in Onecho cemetery. James R. Funeral services were held at the family home near Onecho, Thursday, under the auspices of the A. O. U. W. lodge of this city, and the remains were laid to rest in Onecho cemetery. James R. Wicks was born April 4, 1839 at Beaverdam, Erie county, Pennsylvania, and died at his home in Whitman County, Wash., on July 5, 1905 at 2 o'clock a. m. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Martha E. Wicks and three children, John C., Homer C., and Hattie E., all grown to manhood and womanhood, who, with a brother and niece of the deceased, were present at the time of his death. At the age of five years his parents removed to Illinois where he grew to young manhood and received his education in the crude schools of those early times. In the spring of 1856, while in his eighteenth year, he came overland to California where he passed through some thrilling experiences in the rough mining camps of pioneer days. He also followed the rush to Idaho when gold was discovered and engaged in mining during the turbulent times of the civil war. In 1871 he married Martha Elisabeth Tompkins and in the following year moved to Whitman county and soon settled upon the farm which has been his continuous home ever since. By his untiring energy, industry and perseverance Mr. Wicks has built up a comfortable home and a competency which is a monument to those traits of his character. He was one of the early commissioners of Whitman county and three times was a candidate for the legislature. His loss will be deplored by every good citizen and his memory be respected by all.
