Read More	EDINGTON, JAMES RAY JIM--James Ray Jim Edington was born on March 4, 1949, in Seward. His parents were James T. Edington and Verna Nelson Edington. Jim passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Immanuel Center in Omaha, at the age of 51. Jim and his parents lived in Grand Island until he was about eight, when they moved to Lincoln where his father was based with the Polio Foundation. Soon after the move, Jim became a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, which he remained throughout his life. After playing high school football, including taking part in a Shrine Bowl, and being active in the school’s drama department, Jim graduated in 1967 from Southeast High School in Lincoln. During his teen years, he also played basketball for his church league. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln in 1971, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Music was almost always a central part of Jim’s life. As a young adult, he was a pianist and singer for several bands, traveling to 49 of the 50 states, as well as Canada and Mexico. When Jim was about 28, he returned to Grand Island, where he was employed as a caseworker with the Nebraska Department of Welfare in Hall and Nuckolls counties. He also continued his role as a professional piano player. Jim soon met his future wife, Karen Mary Slusarski, who also lived in Grand Island, and who worked at the Hall County Assessor’s Office. The couple became husband and wife on Sept. 1, 1979, at St. Stanislaus Church in Duncan. Because of his ongoing love of music, Jim eventually attended Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, where he received a degree in broadcasting. Jim and Karen then moved to Gallup, N.M., where he was news and sports director for a radio station there. In 1985, the couple moved to Omaha where Jim worked as an on-air personality for WOW radio, as well as in the news department there. On Oct. 26, 1987, Jim and Karen became proud parents of their son, Ryan James Edington. As the years went by, Jim enjoyed teaching Ryan how to appreciate good music; how to play golf; how to grow a great garden; how to cook a mean steak; how to cheer for the Huskers; and how important having a good sense of humor is. When his mother’s health began to fail, Jim spent many months as her caregiver. Following this involvement, he became a certified nursing assistant, focusing on senior health care. For the past several years, although his own health began to decline, he continued to enjoy traveling and experiencing new things. And now, Jim begins his newest adventure—in a place where he is jamming with the best of them. He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunt, Sylvia Beams; and his uncle, Oscar Nelson. He is survived by his wife and son; aunt, Jane Smith; cousins, Christine Andersen, John Nelson and his wife, Judith; and Jeanette Safarik; as well as numerous brothers-and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Feb. 5, with Rev. Brian Kottas and Rev. Warren Swartz officiating. Delwin Myers sang the hymns and was accompanied by Susan Kleinschmidt. Casket bearers were Keith Nunns, Jeff Nunns, Joseph Slusarski, Daniel Zelasney, Doug Slusarski and Steve Abegglen.
