Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Funeral Home. Reverend Gertie Nickols of High Prairie United Methodist Church and Reverend Gerry Kahler will officiate. James Richard Newman was born on September 3, 1926 at rural Atalissa, the son of John L. Sr. and Jessie E. Cone Newman. He attended rural Atalissa grade schools and West Liberty High School. He met Meryl I. Sywassink in his senior year and they married two years later on June 28, 1946, in Muscatine. She preceded him on July 13, 2007. They were married 61 years. A retired farmer, James also worked at TeStrake's Grain, Beach Lumber, and worked construction with Al Carter and Harold VanZandt. Later he drove MuscaBus for over five years. He loved sports, fishing, hunting, and going to the West Liberty Fair and the races. He was a 4-H leader for 10 years for the Spirit of 76. He was a member of High Prairie United Methodist Church. He is survived by a brother, John L. Newman Jr. of Harrisonville, Missouri; sons, Jerry R. Newman and wife, Jane, of Austin, Texas, Gary L. Newman of Muscatine; and a daughter Marlene M. Etter and husband, Jack, of Oskaloosa; five grandsons, Dr. Jason Newman and wife, Dr. Errin, of Memphis, Tennessee, Thad Newman of Muscatine, Jeremy Newman of Austin, Texas, Jacob Etter of Austin, Texas, and Isaac Etter of St. Louis, Missouri; a step-grandson, Donald Morrison and wife, Robin, of Fredonia; three great-grandsons, Jonathan, Benjamin, & Christopher Newman of Memphis, Tennessee; two step great-granddaughters, Taylor & Kylie Morrison; and several nieces and nephews.
