Massey and Avis Coleman; also sister of Sarah Massey Pearson, wife of John N. Pearson. Mary was a member of the first graduating class of Guilford College in 1892; her major was mathematics. She taught in the public schools. Before marriage she made an extended visit in the home of her maternal uncle, Elijah T. Coleman in Bloomingdale, Indiana. While there she was photographed with his daughter, Alma Coleman. Jimmy bought a part of the William H. Overman farm from his brother John; he planted water oaks, and when the trees were large enough to make shade, he had a house built. He sold the homestead on Little River and moved to the new house in sight of Woodland MH in 1912. He put in a telephone, as John had done, on the new farmers' line that extended three miles up the road. They were happy to be settled so near their kin. Mary was a teacher of adults in Sunday school. For several years she prepared the program for Children's Day at Woodland. Virgil Pike, pastor of Woodland, came from a distance and usually spent Saturday night with them. For several years she served as recording clerk of Contentnea Quarterly Meeting. Mary died of cancer on the liver in August 1925, age 65. Soon after this a new highway was cut through the property of the Pearson brothers, now U.S. 13; Jimmy was disturbed because it cut off a corner of his yard. Being alone, he went often after supper to John's and the road was the chief topic of discussion. The construction changed the environment; branches were drained and so the pitcher plants died; the crews of men burned all the lightwood left from old long leaf pine stumps and crushed the huckleberry bushes. 2) On 11-21-1927 Roberta May Moore (Bertie) b 4-2-1878 d 12-16-1954, daughter of David Moore and Talitha Hollowell and sister of Willie F. Moore. They lived at Genoa, a flag station on the Atlantic Coast Line a mile from Woodland. This Moore family had a close connection with Woodland from its beginning. As a young woman Bertie worked in public institutions, among them the I.O.O.F. Orphanage in Goldsboro and the N.C. State Prison in Raleigh. Like Martha, she worried over the details of housekeeping and demanded perfection of herself. In fact, Jimmy always lived in an immaculate house. In the summer of 1947 Jimmy had angina pectoris, but her recovered sufficiently to do some garden work. He died very suddenly in 1952 at almost 84. In 1947 he sold the farm to Eugene Cox, a close neighbor, reserving the use of the house during his lifetime. Bertie lived two years longer in her home at Genoa. Jimmy and Mary were buried in Woodland Cemetery with other Pearsons, and Bertie was buried in her Moore family plot. Jimmy was a stocky blonde man with very blue eyes and a slight impediment in his speech. He looked like his sister Mary and brother Oliver, though Oliver was much taller. The others were brunettes. He loved to reminisce about the old kitchen utensils which he had kept. I remember best the Dutch oven in which delicious biscuits were cooked on the hearth. Once I noticed a pair of brass candlesticks on the oak buffet, which had belonged to my great-grandmother Sarah Edgerton Pearson. To my surprise, Uncle Jimmy left them to me. Johnny and Jimmy often talked about the cotton they sold for five cents a pound about 1893; hens were 25 cents each and eggs ten cents a dozen. The brothers were highly respected as men of strict integrity.
