James Robert Knecht was born Aug. 3, 1920, on the family farm near Hinton, Iowa, the son of John and Katie (Peterson) Knecht. He attended country school near Hinton. Following his schooling, he farmed with his family and area farmers. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 25, 1942. While on leave, he was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Alma J. Meyer, on Nov. 16, 1942 in Dakota City. He returned from leave and served his country as a private first class in the European Infantry, stationed in Italy and Africa during World War II. He slept in a foxhole for two years during that time. He worked in anti-aircraft and later after the war, guarded the German inmates in the prisons. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 29, 1945. After returning to the states, the couple farmed for many years in Union County, S.D., and east of Akron. After retiring, they moved to the Ridgewood Apartments in Akron. On March 1, 2007, he became a resident of the Akron Care Center. He was a long time member of the First Church of Christ in Akron. He was a long time member of the American Legion Hoschler Post 186 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and was an avid sports fan. He also enjoyed watching the court shows on television. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, Alma of Akron; two children and their spouses, Charlie and Barbee Knecht of South Sioux City and Charlene and Russ Vander Schaaf of Akron; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Molden and their children, Tierney and Brendan of Cozad, Neb., Alan Knecht of South Sioux City and Aimee Vander Schaaf of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother and his wife, Lloyd and Betty Meyer of Akron; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Boomgaarden of Hawarden, Iowa, and Ardie Knecht of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and their husbands, Bertha and Ervin Smid and Velma and Alva Port; three brothers, Alfred Knecht and his wife, Merrilee, Larry Knecht and William Knecht.
