He had been in failing health. He was born on August 16, 1915 at Manhattan, Kansas, to James Wayne and Kate (Robertson) White. He... Read More	****************************** Published Nov. 3, 2009 - Chanute, KS James R. "Jim " White, 94, a longtime Galesburg, Kansas resident, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at his home. He had been in failing health. He was born on August 16, 1915 at Manhattan, Kansas, to James Wayne and Kate (Robertson) White. His mother died shortly after giving birth to him and his aunt, Jennie White, helped his father raise him and his sister Dorothy. He grew up at and attended schools at Burlington, graduating from Burlington High School. He attended the Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science now known as Kansas State University. He participated in the Army ROTC program there and was called to active duty when World War II started. He was stationed in Greenland, New Guinea, and Korea until he was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Burlington where he farmed with his father. He and June Lawrence Dewey were married on Dec. 11, 1946 in Burlington. She survives, of the home. They moved to Galesburg in 1960 where he also farmed. He was an active ham radio operator and was willing to teach anyone who wanted to learn the codes. He was a member of the Galesburg Christian Church and of the former American Legion Post 56. He also served on the school board and was active in the Farmers Union. In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by two sons, Britton White and his wife, Lou Ann, of Galesburg, Dennis Dewey, Chanute; two daughters, Christine Mayfield and her husband, Paige, Galesburg, Kathryn Gill, Fountain Hills, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy Reiger, and his aunt, Jennie White, who helped raise him. Funeral will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Parsons. The family will receive friends at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be held at a later date in the Graceland Cemetery at Burlington. Condolences may be left for the family at www.wallfuneralservices.com. Memorials are suggested to the Galesburg Relief Fund and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home 112 N. 26th, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
