Deceased was born at CoIne. Lancashire, England in the year 1819, and on the 25th day of December 1840 [1841], he married Mary Richardson, who bore him two daughters, the youngest of whom is Mrs. Robert Powell of Elsinore [the other daughter was Sarah]. In 1845, on the death of his wife, the deceased removed to Canada, where he spent three years, and in 1848, on returning to England he married Elizabeth, sister of his former wife, and shortly after removed to Canada, where he has ever since resided. About this time he settled in Galt, and in 1849 united wfth the Methodist Church. An experienced miller by trade, he obtained employment readily in several places throughout Upper Canada, until finally locating in the village of Tara in 1857. About this time enterprising men from every quarter commenced to occupy land in Amabel and Mr. Rushton was among the number, purchasing the homestead (where he resided until called away by death) in June, 1861; he and his family permanently took up their abode in Amabel. In January, 1867. after considerable pressure on the part of many friends, deceased was prevailed on to accept a seat at the Municipal Council Board, which he filled most creditably during that year, after which owing to other duties he did not stand for re-election. In his declining days the deceased again undertook a trans-Atlantic voyage to view once more the scenes where childhood and youth were spent, and returned much benefited by the trip. Two days previous to death the venerable old man knew the end was near and calmly made all final arrangements and with the declining day passed away a life which would have filled creditably, and with distinction, a much more eminent sphere in the world; in manner mild and gentlemanly in the extreme, and in spirit meek, he always led a consistent Christian life, and was noted far and wide as the most obliging and accommodating of neighbours and the sincerest of friends. His services to the church of his adoption were most signal and untiring, having done more in fact than any other individual to assist the good cause while in its infancy in these parts, and when many of its members were in somewhat reduced circumstances, his large heart and open hand never failed at the time of need. The deceased leaves a sorrowing widow and nine children to lament his demise, all very comfortably situated, and held In the highest esteem. The present Deputy-Reeve of Amabel, Mr. John Rushton, the eldest son, has been in the Council for ten years, and Mr. James Rushton, the second son, is President of the North Bruce Patron Association and a likely candidate in the near future for parliamentary honours, being also a noted local preacher in the Methodist church. The funeral took place to the Elsinore cemetery an Sunday. October 20th. services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Ferguson, of Southampton, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Mowat, of Allenford Presbyterian Church, who on account of the great respect accorded to the deceased, did not hold any service that afternoon in his church at Elsinore. Despite the extreme inclemency the weather. coupled with the deep snowfall, the funeral was one of the largest ever seen in these parts, and many people came from considerable distances to testify to the high character of the worthy dead. As was said of Brutus by his great rival, so we repeat, but much more truly of this noble Christian man:-- "His life was gentle; and the elements, so mixed in him, nature might stand up, and say to all the world, this was a man."
