Russell was born Oct. 26, 1913, in Laredo, Mo., a son of Samuel Grant and Lillie Catherine Barr. When he was 2 years old, he moved to Boyd, and lived numerous places until settling in Edgar, where he attended grade school and graduated from Edgar High School. He went on to learn the mechanic trade and worked at Freeman Auto Service until Sept. 18, 1942. Russell entered the Army Air Corps in WWII. While working at Freeman Auto Service, he met Catherine L. Corkill from Nortonville, Kan., who was visiting her aunt and uncle on a farm just south of Rockvale. They were engaged and later married in Mill Valley, Calif., and lived on Hamilton Air Base in California until his discharge. Russell and Catherine moved to Billings, where they built a home and lived there for 42-plus years. Russell worked for S & P Brake Supply for 35-1/2 years before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an American Legion member for 45 years, and belonged to Rimrock Masonic Lodge #149, A.F. & A.M. Russell's hobbies were traveling, camping and fishing. He enjoyed woodworking and making things for other people. He and Catherine were avid square dancers for 26 years, belonging to both the Star Dusters and the 59ers Square Dance Clubs. Russell was always willing to help others. He and his wife were always together, no matter where they went. They traveled and worked together all their married lives. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Esther A. Barr of Bozeman; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other family, including Juli Reynolds of Phoenix and Zame Broer of Kent, Wash. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Billings. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Smith Downtown Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
