Mr. Bender was born, raised and educated in Ellensburg. He was a farmer, a school bus driver for Ellensburg School District, an electrician for several Lake Washington shipyards and worked for Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver. Mr. Bender returned to the Kittitas Valley in 1945 where he farmed, logged, operated a commercial stationary hay baling operation, co-owned Independent Feed and Storage, was a mechanic for Kelleher's farm equipment shop, and was retired from Clerf Equipment Company of Kittitas in 1981. Survivors include his wife, Florence; daughters, Dixie Stilwell of Redmond, Wash., Carol West of Ellensburg, Barbara Raap of George and Deborah Humphrey of Arlington, Wash.; a son, Russ Jr. of Yakima; a brother, Harrell; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Yakima Herald-Republic, November 30, 1999 ------------------------- OBIT 2: Lifelong Kittitas Valley resident, James Russell Bender, passed away Sunday, November 28, 1999 at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. He was born in Ellensburg on March 23, 1918, the fifth child of Louis and Maria (Hayes) Bender, Russell was raised on the family dairy farm where he and his four brothers milked 60 head of cows by hand every morning and night. He attended Drollinger School #31, Washington Grade School and graduated from Ellensburg High in 1935. After graduation from high school, he continued to work on the family farm while driving school bus for the Ellensburg School District. Russell courted Florence Champie, often on horseback, until their marriage in Seattle on August 22, 1940. The Benders were known for their beautiful spotted horses, often riding in the Ellensburg Rodeo, Cle Elum Fourth of July and Seattle Potlatch (Seafair) parades. Russell continued to work for his father while living on Hamilton Ranch off the Tjossem Road. During the war years, he and his family moved to Bellevue where Russell worked as an electrician at several Lake Washington shipyards. Later, during the war he moved his family to Vancouver where he worked for Kaiser Shipyards. In 1945, he and his family returned to the Kittitas Valley to farm once again. Russell moved his family in 1952 to their current residence of the Tjossem Road. Russell then went into business with his brother, George, operating a commercial stationary hay baling operation for six years. They employed several hundred Kittitas Valley residents over this time. He and his brother then purchased Independent Feed and Storage in Kittitas, operating the business for several years. Russell and George also logged during the winter months in the mind 1950s until the logging death of his brother George in 1957. Russell then worked for several valley farmers, including the Bohanons and Bulls. Following this he was employed as a mechanic by Kelleher's farm equipment shop. The business was later purchased by Clerf Equipment Company of Kittitas and Russell followed the business, eventually retiring from it in 1981. Russell worked hard and played hard, enjoying life to its fullest. He enjoyed being around his family, spending many Memorial Day weekends fishing on Upper County Lakes, an annual Fourth of July camping trip to the Naneum, spending rodeo weekend among family and friends and taking his son on many fall hunting trips. Russell is survived by his wife, Florence; daughters, Dixie (Richard) Stilwell of Redmond, Carol (Paul) West of Ellensburg, Barbara (Ward) Raap of George, and Deborah (Lloyd) Humphrey of Arlington; son Russ Jr. (Laurie Morgan) of Yakima; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother, Harrell, and brother-in-law, Warren Kidder, both of Ellensburg. He was preceded in death by his parent, three brothers, and a sister. Private graveside services will be held at IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg on Thursday, December 2.
