Description	:	James R. McLaughlin, age 84 of Marathon, Iowa died July 30, 2006 in Lytle, Texas after a valiant battle with cancer. Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. the United Methodist Church in Marathon, with Reverend David Schumann and Lay Minister Dean Maiden officiating. Burial will be in Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Friday, August 4, 2006 from 6-9:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. James was born to Clifford and Hilda (Erickson) McLaughlin on January 30, 1922. He was raised on a farm outside Marathon and graduated from Marathon Consolidated School in 1939. On November 30, 1942, James was united in marriage to Marjorie Anderson and they resided on a farm outside Marathon. They were blessed with four children: Mary, Steve, Don and Sue. After nearly 40 years of marriage, Marge died September 11, 1982. In 1950, Jim and Marge moved into Marathon and Jim became the D-X station and tank wagon owner. He also was a school bus driver for many years and caretaker of the Marathon Cemetery. He later became an Electrolux salesman and made many friends around northwest Iowa with his good customer service. He retired in 1985. During his retirement, Jim spent many summers in and around Cass Lake, Minnesota serving as Camp Host at a campground and later as a National Forestry Service worker. Jim was a member of the Marathon United Methodist Church for over 70 years. Jim loved sports of all kinds. He played all the sports in high school and, after he moved to town, he started Little League ball in Marathon. He spent many hours gathering scrap iron to sell in order to buy uniforms. He coached many young boys and girls in Little League and high school baseball and softball. Jim was probably "pop tab king" in that he collected many pounds of pop tabs for Ronald McDonald houses. He also loved going to garage sales in the summer and selling those items at a flea market in Texas during the winter. He made many friends in Texas with this business. He also loved to fish and play cards. He was particularly interested in Native American and early American history. Jim was a loving father, grandpa and great-grandpa. He loved teasing and playing jokes on people. He also loved spoiling all the family pets. Left to cherish his memory are his four children: daughter Mary and husband Tim Greiner of Isanti, Minnesota; son Steve of Lytle, Texas; son Donald and wife Carol of Kyle, Texas; daughter Susan and husband Tim Morgan of Santa Rosa, California; grandchildren: Dan Crew and wife Tracy, Dawn Solarz and husband Greg, Michelle Mugno and husband William, and Michael McLaughlin; seven great-grandchildren: Tyler, Abby, Josh, Krystal, Elizabeth, Rachael and Melodie; sisters Dorothy Beauvais and Marge Ladwig; extended family and many, many friends. Preceding Jim in death were his wife, Marge; his parents; his brother, Lowell; and his son-in-law, Gordon Crew.
