Mr. Beechman (sic) was one of the first settlers of Nuckolls county (sic), coming here in the early 70's and locating on Liberty Creek in what is now St. Stephens precinct. At that time there were but four families in the county, and the Indian and the buffalo were familiar sights. Beechmanville post office then established and named for the subject of this sketch. Mr. Beecham (sic) was an Englishman by birth and first settled in New Jersey, coming from that state to Nebraska. He was the principal factor in locating the county seat at Nelson; in fact it is due solely to his efforts that it was located here. At the organization of the county, the struggle for the county seat was between Nelson and Elkton, the latter town was started upon what is now know (sic) as the old Sam Johnson farm in the vicinity of Oak. Mr. Beecham (sic) fought for Nelson and on the day of election gave a dinner and invited all to eat who would vote for Nelson. All others were excluded, and the result is known. Mr. Beecham (sic) in his character was strictly upright and unbending. Money could not buy him and he was kind and liberal to a fault. His door was always open to the stranger and there are many of our old citizen here who still remeber (sic) him with feelings of deep respect and kindness. He leaves a wife and four daughters - Mrs. O.B. Herrick, Mrs. Ed. Moody, and Mrs. Elizabeth Bonnell of Webster county (sic). One daughter whose name we do not know, resides somewhere in the western part of the state. His widow resides at Fairfield, where they have resided for the past six years. His remains were buried in the Nelson Cemetary (sic) last Sunday beside those of his father and mother. He always claimed Nuckolls county (sic) as his home and he had always expressed a desire to be laid away where he had passed through the most active and exciting scenes unto which the association and friendships formed during his pioneer life had endeared him.
