Sterling, Iowa, Dec. 19, 1870, and departed this life at Iowa State hospital on March 21, 1935, at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 2 days. He grew up on a farm near Mt. Sterling and in early manhood was united in marriage with Rosa Grubbs, August 21, 1888. To this union seven children were born, three boys and four girls. Mr. Scotton spent almost his entire life on the farm near Mt. Sterling, he has been a sufferer for the past months and was finally taken to the State hospital for care, where he died. His departure leaves a grief stricken wife, two sons at home, Hazen and Torrena; Minnie Webb, of Ottumwa, Iowa; Lena Gee, Ft. Madison, Iowa; Vallie Randolph and Marie Campbell, of Mt. Sterling, and Earnest Scotton, at home. Two brothers preceded him in death. Besides those mentioned he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Dora Watson, of Mt. Sterling, and Mrs. Mary B. Davis, of East Moline, Ill., fourteen grandchildren, a host of friends and neighbors to mourn his passing. Mrs. Scotton was a kind, loving husband and father, had a helping hand for those in need, to know him was to love and cherish him. Funeral services were held in the Mt. Sterling, M.E. church, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. F.M. James the pastor, and interment was in the Harness cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
