Passed Away Suddenly (Special to the Owen Sound Sun-Times) PORT ELGIN, Dec. 2, 1926 The citizens of Port Elgin and district were grievously shocked to learn of the death of Mr. James Struthers a well known and highly respected pioneer of Bruce Township and for 20 years treasurer of Port Elgin who passed away Friday morning as a result of injuries received while on his way to attend a political meeting at Underwood. Mr. Struthers, who moved from Port Elgin to Underwood in the spring of 1925, had despite his advanced years been taking a great interest in temperance and political issues now before the people and on Tuesday evening of last week he started out to walk to the township hall where a political meeting was being held. Whether he took a weak spell and fell on the road or whether he slipped when trying to get out of the way of the approaching horse is not known, but Angus McDonald and Andrew Smith who were driving along the road hearing a moan and feeling a jar stopped their horse and on investigation found Mr. Struthers lying on the road. He was taken to the hall where it was found that he had a deep wound on the side of his face and neck as though stepped on by a horse and from there was rushed in a car to his home where medical attention was immediately summoned and seven stiches were required to close the wound. At no time did he lose consciousness and despite the loss of blood and severe shock to his system he was making good progress toward recovery until Friday morning when he complained of feeling dizzy and a few minutes later passed away. It is thought that a clot of blood going to his brain was the cause of his death. Few men have held the whole hearted respect and love of a community as had Mr. Struthers. Mr. Struthers was a constant reader and kept himself well posted in affairs of home and state. To the last he enjoyed his faculties and was a most intelligent conversationalist for a man of his advanced years. The late Mr. Struthers was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1844 and when five years of age came to Canada on a sailing vessel with his parents who settled for a time at Thorold, where his father who was a stone cutter by trade was engaged to cut stones to replace the old logs used on the locks in the Welland Canal. After a year's residence at Thorold they moved to Chippewa, where Mr. Struthers received his first schooling. Four years later the family moved to Kent county. They moved to Goderich and after a residence of three or four years came to Bruce township and took up land on the 8th concession which Mr. Struthers and his five brothers assisted their father in clearing. Mr. Struthers also assisted in clearing other farms on the 8th concession of Bruce one of which he himself successfully worked for many years. In 1870 Mr. Struthers married Miss Janet Blakely of Bentinck township. They were blessed with a family of nine children seven of whom survive. During his long residence in Bruce township Mr. Struthers served the municipality as assessor for two years, tax collector for one year and auditor for three years and over fifteen years acted as returning officer for municipal and parliamentary elections. In 1902 Mr. Struthers turned over his farm to his son John B. and came with his wife and family to Port Elgin and continued as a resident here for 23 years during which time he faithfully served this municipality as treasurer for twenty years. In March 1925, Mr. Struthers resigned this office and with his wife and daughter Winnifred returned to Bruce township. In religion the late Mr. Struthers was an ardent Presbyterian and in politics a life long Liberal. He leaves to mourn the loss of a loving husband and kind father his wife, five daughters and two sons, (Ethel) Mrs. L. Higbee, Buffalo; (Bethea) Mrs. David Alexander, Vancouver; Marjorie, of Vancouver; and Winnifred at home; John B. of Underwood; and Dr. James D. of Port Dover. The funeral service took place Sunday. Service was held in the United Church, Underwood, with Rev. Atkinson of Underwood and Rev. Sinclair of Tiverton officiating. Interment was made in Baie-de-Dore cemetery. Pall bearers were Messrs. William Brown, Peter Dobson, Herbert Carr, Joe Henderson, and Robert Brown of Bruce Twp.
