After more than ninety years of remarkable robust health Mr. Woodling who for a number of years has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. D.L. Richards, of North Sixth Street in this city, died on Monday morning, June 12. Mr. Woodling was a kindly Christian gentleman, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a very interesting conversationalist, the possessor of a cordial and pungent wit always ready for use. During the past three years his health slowly faded but he was active until the three days immediately preceding his death. James T. Woodling was born at Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 28, 1842, son of James and Elizabeth Woodling. When twelve years of age, Mr. Woodling came with ox team and covered wagon to Johnson County, Iowa. Here he shared in all the pioneer experiences incidental to the conquering of the prairie wilderness. On the outbreak of the Civil War his father enlisted and left the responsibilities of maintaining the home upon the young but capable shoulders of Mr. Woodling. After nearly three years of service word reached the prairie home that the husband and father had been claimed by death. In Johnson County on December 31, 1871, Mr. Woodling was married to Miss Laura Geary. One girl and four boys were born into the home and one girl was adopted into the family. Two sons, William and Herbert and the mother are buried at Newell. Here Mr. Woodling is to be buried on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. D.L. Richards, daughter, of Estherville, with whom Mr. Woodling has made his home in recent years, Mr. Art Woodling of Alpha, Minnesota, Mr. Harold Woodling of Estherville and Mrs. Floyd Belt of Sac City, together with five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren survive him. Services are to be held at the D.L. Richards home on North Sixth Street at 10 A.M. on Wednesday and at the Congregational Church, Newell, Iowa, at 2 P.M. with interment at Newell.
