Duncan, Spartanburg James Thomas (J.T.) Duncan, 73, of 123 High Drive, Spartanburg, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Apalache, S.C., Mr. Duncan was the son of the late Charles Heintish and Zadie Mason Duncan. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg where he was a member of the Unity Bible Sunday School Class and a former usher. An Army veteran, having served in the Philippines Islands during World War II, he was a retiree of Southern Railway Systems (now Norfolk-Southern Railroad), having worked for almost 40 years. At the railroad, he was active with the corporation's safety program and was the recipient of several awards for his leadership including the Southern Railway Chairman's Award in 1983-1984. He also was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the United Transportation Union. In earlier years he was a Boy Scout leader and softball coach for community leagues. He was a Mason and in 1998 was awarded the distinguished 50-year acclamation from the Lone Oak Masonic Lodge of which he was a member. In 1990, he was nominated for the prestigious Jefferson Award and was a former South Carolina State Constable. He was the oldest active volunteer member of the North Spartanburg Fire Department and Rescue 9, with 24 years of service. He was named "Man of the Year" by the N.S.F.D. in 1983 and in 1990 in recognition of his efforts and service to the department and the community. In 1989 he was honored by the N.S.F.D. Ladies Auxiliary as "Person of the Year." Mr. Duncan was honored by the Old-Timers Softball League of South Carolina in 1998 for his participation in that group. In 1995, he received recognition with a State of South Carolina Commendation Honor issued by the South Carolina House of Representatives for service to his community. He played Santa Claus for 20 years. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Nell Bishop Duncan of the home; three daughters, S. Elaine Duncan Goodwin and Charlotte Duncan Hyder and son- in-law Steve Hyder of Spartanburg, and Judy Duncan Poteat of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Raymond N. Duncan and Charles H. Duncan of Spartanburg; one sister, Ruby Duncan Brown of Spartanburg; one granddaughter, Katie Mariea Hyder of Spartanburg; and one grandson, Michael Allen Poteat of Inman. The family will receive friends in the chapel at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 26. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 27, at First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg, Highway 176 West, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Michael Hamlet, the Rev. Timothy Hackett, and the Rev. Frank Bryant. Cryptside service and entombment will follow at the Heritage Mausoleum, Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Raymond N. Duncan, Earl Shields, Charles R. Masters, R.T. (Sam) High, N.J. Renfro, Walter A. Means, B.A. Collins Jr., Tommy Biershenk Sr., and Raymond Ridgeway. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Unity Bible Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of North Spartanburg. Full honorary escort will be active and retired members of the North Spartanburg Fire Department and Rescue 9. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the J.T. Duncan Memorial Fund (N.S.F.D.), North Spartanburg Fire Department, 8767 Asheville Highway, Spartanburg, S.C. 29316, to erect a memorial to his memory.
