James Porter, eldest son of William and Nancy Porter, was born Jan. 17. 1875 and was one of 11 children. He was born on the farm nortwest of Wetmore and lived his entire life in this community. James Porter, eldest son of William and Nancy Porter, was born Jan. 17. 1875 and was one of 11 children. He was born on the farm nortwest of Wetmore and lived his entire life in this community. He passed away at the Sabetha hospital March 3, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. He had not been in his usual good health for awhile but contiuned to work until about two weeks prior to his death. Jim, as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, will be missed by his many relatives and friends who gathered in a severe snowstorm to pay their last respects, the church being filled. He was united in marriage to Mary Zwahl at the Baptist parsonage, Oct. 28, 1903, at Wetmore. To them were born six children, Walter Marvin of Wetmore, Bernice Blanche Laird, Garden City; Edith Pearl Wiewel, Concil Bluffs, Ia; Grace Mary Hawley, Goff; Louis James Porter, Long Beach, Calif.; Capt. Ernest Carl Porter, Denver. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, two brothers, William Porter, Wetmore, and Leslie E. Porter, Topeka; six sisters, Mrs Amanda Lynn, Mrs. Ella McKee, Mrs. Edna Bontrager, Mrs. Jennie Johnson, Mrs. Jessie Bryant, Mrs. Grace Sourk. Two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Pendergrass and Mrs. Ethel League, preceded him in death. He was baptized at the Baptist church in early manhood and was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 34 years, and was filling the office of tyler, attending a meeting just previous to his death. The Masonic burial service was used, conducted by Elmer Johnson of Netawaka. A large number of Masons attended the funeral in a body. There were many beautiful flowers and all the children and their families were present except Mrs. Archie (Grace) Hawley who had been confined to the hospital soon after her father entered. A sister, Mrs. Jessie Bryant of Kansas City, and other relatives from Holton and Goff were present.
