He was born September 28, 1927 in Batesville and was the son of the late Glennard and Margaret (Powell) Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter retired from the Guernsey County Sheriff’s office after 35 years of service where he was Sheriff for 20 years. He was born September 28, 1927 in Batesville and was the son of the late Glennard and Margaret (Powell) Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter retired from the Guernsey County Sheriff’s office after 35 years of service where he was Sheriff for 20 years. He was member of Central Christian Church, Quaker City, and the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association. He was an Army veteran of WWII. In addition to his parents “Peanut” was preceded in death by his wife Luella K. (Betts) Carpenter whom he married June 1, 1951 and passed away April 25, 2013; one son Philip Carpenter; one brother Charles Hoyt Carpenter. He is survived by one son Brent (Sherrie) Carpenter of Quaker City; seven grandchildren, Jaime (Jeffery) Denney, Darin (Melinda) Carpenter, Joshua (Mariah Mason) Carpenter, Brian (Kate) Carpenter, Jamie (Cliff) Wickham, Evan Carpenter and Tyson Carpenter; six great grandchildren, Jacob and Jaden Denney, Bria Carpenter, Cameron Weaver, Charles Carpenter, and Aubrey Green. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City where services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Jeff Eschbaugh and Pastor Ed Eberhart officiating. Burial will follow in Friends Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. The Daily Jeffersonian Cambridge, Ohio Guernsey County 9 April 2019 QUAKER CITY, Ohio — A sad note… former Guernsey County Sheriff James U. “Peanut” Carpenter has died. He passed away on Sunday. Carpenter was 91-year-old and was a resident of Quaker City. He was Sheriff from 1981 until his retirement in 2000. Born September 28, 1927, he was hired as a deputy by Sheriff Andrew Beros in September of 1965, was promoted to sergeant in 1971 and lieutenant in 1973. In July of 1980 he was appointed to serve the final six months of Sheriff Beros’ unexpired term. Originally not planning on running for Sheriff, Carpenter reconsidered as constituents urged him to run. Late in filing in 1980, Carpenter was forced to run as an independent, write-in candidate.
