The following courtesy of Cindy Walcott: The first settler of Glover was Mr. James Vance, who came from Londonderry, NH when he was 29 years old. His wife Hannah Abbott, was from Dracut, MA. His purchase of land embraced 160 acres for which he paid one dollar an acre. Mr. Vance was of a strong constitution, able to endure the hardships of a new settlement, and was of a cheerful turn of mind. He loved to speak of the early settlers of Glover, and to narrate amusing anecdotes in respect to them. Several times he pointed out to the writer of this article the spot in the north part of the town where he cut down the first tree. Mr. Vance died November 26th 1864, aged 95 years and 7 months, leaving numerous descendants in Glover and surrounding towns. His funeral was attended at the Congregational Church, Reverend S. Jl. B.
