Description	:	James W. "Billy" Carper, 87, of New Castle, Va., passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009, as the sun broke through the morning rain clouds to light his path to heaven. Billy was a Christian gentleman who served the Lord and his church, New Castle Christian Church, with over 74 years of membership. "Billy" Carper, 87, of New Castle, Va., passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009, as the sun broke through the morning rain clouds to light his path to heaven. Billy was a Christian gentleman who served the Lord and his church, New Castle Christian Church, with over 74 years of membership. Billy was a Deacon in the church and rang the bell for over 50 years. At his hands the bell could be heard for miles and miles, even Boston, Mass., (by phone). Billy proudly served his country in the United States Army both in World War II and in the Korean War. Upon leaving the military he worked at Radford Arsenal for 32 years. After retiring Billy proceeded to work at the Paitsel Funeral Home. He was active in numerous civic groups and organizations including the Masonic Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, VFW, Woodman of the World, and the Antique Car Club. He liked to work in his garden on his John Deere Tractor and kept his '56 Ford Fairlane in pristine condition. Billy always had a joke to share with anyone. He was always there to help his neighbors and was loved very much. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel A. Carper; his mother and father, Ethel and Lannie Carper; a sister, Gladys Robertson; grandson, Jon Mark Wade; and stepson, Jimmy W. Watkins, of Covington. He is survived by his daughter, Ella Jean Wade; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alma Elmore, Blanche Bostic, Betty and Don Charlton, of New Castle, Eloise and the Rev. Troy Webb, of Roanoke; as well as many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends, including special friends, Shelby and Rex Rexrode. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the New Castle Christian Church with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009. Flowers are appreciated or contributions may be made to the New Castle Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 287, New Castle, Va. 24127. The family would like to thank the staff of Carilion Hospice for their compassion and care provided in Billy's last days.
