OBITUARY - Nevada Evening Journal Funeral rites for James W. Hynes, 69, longtime promment and respected resident of south Grant township, were held Friday afternoon at the Lilly Funeral home, followed by interment in the Nevada cemetery. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends from the community in which he has so long lived and been active, for the services which were in charge of Rev. C.E. Lookingbill. The songs were by Mrs. L.E. Smith with Mrs. Grant Hathaway at the organ. Mr. Hynes, who passed away at Mary Greeley hospital, Ames, August 11, after a long illness, had been 69 years of age three days before his death. He was born in Boone county, Iowa, August 8, 1874, a son of James & Susan Hynes. His parents both died when he was but 13 years of age and from that time on he made his own way in life. He was united in marriage to Miss Mona Handsacker in Nevada, February 25, 1902 and shortly afterwards they located on a farm near Shipley and that had since been the family home, where they raised their three sons, James, Melvin and Merlin Hynes; as well as two grandchildren, Linda and larry Hynes. After serving 5 years as director of a rural school district, he was active in the promotion and building of the Shipley consolidated school, and served for 27 years on that board, most of which time he was president of the board, only retiring after his health began to fail him in May of this year. This is the information obtained from an 1880 census listing the parents of James and his siblings. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was only 13, which left not only James an orphan, but 5 other children. His father, James, Sr., was 46 yrs., born about 1834 in Ireland. In 1880, they were living in Colfa, Boone Co., Ia, where he worked as a farmer.. He had married Susan Woods Hynes, who was also born in Ireland, and they became parents to John, Edward, Michael, Margaret,Mary A., and James, Jr. Contributor: Jean Wilson -
